Co-occurrence
| It is unlikely that any one label will give an accurate profile of a pupil's learning difficulties and needs. Where there is a core Specific Learning Difficulty, we should expect to find an overlap of learning difficulties. | |

|
| Obvious Difficulties | Possible Co-occurring Characteristics |
| decoding text | information processing |
| spelling | short term memory |
| following instructions | |
| sense of direction | |
| sequencing | |
| concept of time | |
| copying from board | |
| handwriting | |
| small-step thinking | |
| Co-occurring characteristics are often attributes to 'not paying attention,' or not trying hard enough. These often cause greater hardship for the learner than dealing with a weakness in reading and spelling and can cause the low self-esteem and frustrations which result in behavioural problems. |
